Chapter 18 - The School Lockdown
The school went into lockdown before Claire arrived.
Nolan and Parker were moved to a secure residence with their counselor and two state officers. I drove there with Evelyn, every red light feeling like an hour.
Claire reached the campus in a rented car and tried to enter through the visitors’ center using a forged authorization signed with my name.
Security recognized her from the alert.
She ran again.
This time she made it only as far as the athletic field.
Officers arrested her near the fence. The elegant red dress was gone. She wore jeans, a dark coat, and the stunned expression of someone who believed intelligence should have made her untouchable.
Inside her bag were two prepaid phones, cash, and documents naming her temporary guardian of Nolan and Parker if I became incapacitated.
The twins watched from an upstairs window.
Parker turned away first.
Nolan did not.
“She was going to use us,” he said.
“Yes.”
“Did Uncle Daniel know?”
I could not lie.
“I don’t know how much he knew.”
Daniel answered that question later under oath. He admitted signing blank pages Claire said were needed for school emergency forms. He insisted he never intended to take the boys.
The prosecutor replied, “Intent does not erase reckless help.”
Claire was held without bail.
Daniel was released under strict conditions after agreeing to cooperate.
That night, the twins asked whether they would lose their school because the fund was stolen.
“No,” I told them. “Your mother protected you better than any of us understood.”
Evelyn had found another account Laura created independently.
