Chapter 16 - The Red Folder
Security cameras tracked Claire into the underground garage.
She abandoned her heels beside a stairwell, changed into shoes hidden in her car, and drove out before the warrant team blocked the exits.
The red folder remained under her arm.
Daniel watched the footage from an interview room and whispered, “She took the beneficiary list.”
Investigators turned toward him.
“What beneficiary list?”
He refused to answer until his new attorney arrived.
Evelyn and I reviewed every trust schedule. No document was called a beneficiary list.
Then Parker remembered something. Months earlier, Claire had asked him whether Laura ever mentioned “the Bennett charitable names.” He thought she meant donors.
Laura’s flash drive contained a second encrypted file. Inside was a list of families receiving anonymous educational grants from the Bennett Foundation. Their addresses, children’s names, and payment schedules were confidential.
Claire had stolen information that could expose vulnerable families.
But why?
Marcus discovered several grant accounts had recently received suspicious change-of-bank requests. Someone planned to redirect scholarship payments.
The red folder likely held signatures and identification documents needed to complete the theft.
We froze every charitable transfer and contacted the families.
One mother, Tanya Reed, told us Claire had visited her home posing as a foundation auditor.
“She asked me to sign new banking forms,” Tanya said. “I refused, so she threatened my daughter’s scholarship.”
Tanya had recorded the conversation on her doorbell camera.
Claire’s voice was unmistakable.
Then police located her car near Logan Airport.
The vehicle was empty.
