Chapter 23 - Claire’s Trial

Claire entered court in a gray jail uniform instead of the red dress she wore like armor.

Her attorney argued she never intended to harm me. The altered medication, he said, was meant only to create symptoms for the conservatorship petition.

The prosecutor answered, “When you secretly increase a heart patient’s dosage, you do not control whether the result is confusion, collapse, or death.”

The jury watched the kitchen video.

They heard Dr. Hale admit his role. Melissa explained the forged documents. Tanya played the doorbell recording from the scholarship scheme. Marcus traced every stolen dollar.

Daniel testified for two days.

Claire stared at him with open hatred.

“You promised me,” she whispered as he passed.

He stopped only once.

“No,” he said. “I obeyed you. That is not the same thing.”

Then I took the stand.

Claire’s attorney asked whether I used wealth to control my family.

“I used money to solve problems I should have confronted with truth,” I said. “That was my mistake.”

He asked whether I wanted revenge.

“I wanted my grandsons safe. I wanted stolen money returned. And I wanted my age to stop being treated as permission.”

The final evidence was Laura’s video of Daniel saying he would control everything after my death. It did not prove Claire’s crimes, but it showed the weakness she exploited.

After closing arguments, the jury deliberated for nineteen hours.

They returned with verdicts on fourteen counts.

The clerk stood.

“On the charge of attempted murder…”
