Chapter 2 - The Car That Was Never His

The Lincoln had barely reached Charles Street when Daniel called.

I let it ring.

Then he called again.

By the fifth call, Evelyn’s assistant had already contacted the trust’s vehicle manager. The black BMW Daniel drove carried his initials on the plates, but the title was held by Bennett Holdings. I had leased it for him after his first promotion, telling myself it was a reward for hard work.

At 11:17 a.m., a tow truck pulled in front of the townhouse.

Daniel finally left a voicemail.

“Dad, some idiot is trying to steal my car. Call me now.”

Evelyn sat across from me in her downtown office, silver hair pinned neatly behind her head. She placed a thick folder on the table.

“The BMW is only the beginning,” she said. “The townhouse, the company shares, the investment accounts, the club membership, even the credit facility Claire uses—all trust-controlled.”

I stared at the list. I had known the structure, of course. I created it. But seeing the full weight of what I had provided made my stomach tighten.

“Do not punish them out of anger,” Evelyn warned.

“I’m not.”

“Then what are you doing?”

I opened my briefcase and removed the muddy imprint Claire’s heel had left on a linen napkin when it struck the floor.

“I’m finding out whether they loved me,” I said, “or simply loved what came through me.”

Evelyn slid one more file forward.

“There is something else. Daniel requested an emergency distribution from the trust last week.”

I looked up.

“He forged your approval.”
