Chapter 15 - The Notary Ring
The federal investigators knew the seal.
It had appeared on fraudulent property transfers in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Florida. The ring created convincing documents using stolen notary stamps, aged paper, and compromised legal software.
Claire’s cousin, Melissa Pierce, worked for the document service at the center of the scheme.
Records showed Claire visited Melissa three times before my false will appeared.
When agents searched Melissa’s office, they found templates bearing my name, Laura’s name, and the twins’ names. They also found practice sheets filled with copied signatures.
Claire denied knowing anything.
Melissa did not.
Facing federal charges, she explained that Claire ordered the documents and Daniel supplied originals to copy.
“He brought his father’s estate folder,” Melissa said. “He joked that old men never notice when paper disappears.”
The statement reached us hours before the conservatorship hearing.
Daniel’s attorney withdrew from the case, citing ethical obligations. Claire’s attorney requested a delay.
Judge Rebecca Sloan denied it.
In court, Evelyn presented my independent neurological evaluation, the unedited hospital records, Dr. Hale’s cooperation agreement, and evidence of the forged documents.
The judge dismissed the petition with prejudice.
Then she referred Daniel and Claire for investigation of attempted exploitation of an elderly person.
Daniel looked at me across the courtroom.
For the first time, he seemed truly terrified.
Outside, Nolan and Parker waited beside the Lincoln.
Before we reached them, an officer approached Daniel with a warrant.
Claire took one step backward.
