Chapter 1 - The Key That No Longer Worked

“Move. Dad gave me this house.”

Ryan twisted the old brass key so hard that his knuckles turned white.

It would not move.

The new lock gleamed in the Texas morning sun.

Ryan stared at it for half a second, then drove his shoulder toward the open doorway.

The lead police officer planted his boots and stopped him with one firm palm against his chest.

“Step away from the door.”

Ryan’s forward momentum died at the threshold.

Behind him, a rented moving truck idled in the driveway.

Claire stood several feet away beneath the porch lantern, holding a new silver key between her fingers.

She did not flinch.

She had spent years stepping aside whenever Ryan wanted something.

Their father’s attention.

Family money.

Credit for work he had not done.

Now Ryan had arrived with movers because he believed the lake house was his too.

Claire raised the silver key beside his old one.

“You brought the wrong key.”

Ryan’s anger shifted into uncertainty.

Then he noticed the sealed cream envelope inside Claire’s handbag.

“What did you do?”

Claire removed her phone and briefly turned its blurred screen toward the officer.

Ryan recognized the saved voicemail immediately.

His hand moved toward it before the second officer stepped closer.

Claire returned the phone to her bag and lifted the sealed envelope.

Ryan’s face lost color.

Claire let the silence stretch.

“Did Dad tell you what he signed last night?”

Ryan turned toward the dark interior of the house.

Their father was nowhere inside.

And suddenly, Ryan looked less like a man claiming his property and more like a man realizing he had walked directly into evidence.
