Chapter 7 - The Message He Forgot

Claire showed the officer the saved voicemail.

The words were unreadable on screen, but the audio was clear.

Ryan threatened to have her removed.

He described the house as already transferred.

Then came the line he had forgotten saying:

“Dad signed the second page. I handled the rest.”

The officer looked toward Ryan.

“What did you handle?”

Ryan stared at Claire’s phone.

“It was a private family discussion.”

“You threatened to remove the recorded owner from her home.”

“I believed the transfer was complete.”

“Who prepared it?”

“Our father’s attorney.”

Claire knew that was false.

William had used the same attorney for twenty years.

Maya had already spoken with him.

He knew nothing about any transfer.

The officer asked for the attorney’s name.

Ryan gave one.

Claire recognized it.

Evan Cole.

A friend from Ryan’s country club.

Not a property attorney.

Evan had once helped Ryan challenge a business debt and had nearly been disciplined for submitting misleading paperwork.

Maya searched public records from her car.

Evan’s license was currently suspended.

When Claire shared that information, Ryan’s face changed.

He had not expected anyone to verify his story before he got inside.

The lead officer asked whether Evan prepared the document.

Ryan said nothing.

Silence became another piece of evidence.
