Chapter 17 - William’s Apology

William came to Claire’s office three weeks later.
He did not ask to enter the lake house.
That was progress, though not enough.
He placed the old guest key on her desk.
“I thought Ryan needed me.”
Claire waited.
“I thought you didn’t.”
“That isn’t an apology.”
William nodded slowly.
“I treated your stability as permission to take from you.”
Claire said nothing.
“I believed helping Ryan was more urgent because he was failing.”
“And helping me was less important because I succeeded.”
“Yes.”
The answer hurt.
But honesty was cleaner than excuses.
William admitted he resented that Claire built something beyond his influence.
Ryan made him feel central.
Claire made decisions without needing approval.
“I confused being needed with being loved,” he said.
Claire looked at him.
“Did you know Ryan planned to sell the house?”
“No.”
“Did you know he planned to move in before I agreed?”
“Yes.”
“Then you supported the theft of possession, even if you didn’t know the final purpose.”
William lowered his head.
“Yes.”
Claire did not forgive him that day.
She told him trust would require time, boundaries, and consequences.

He accepted the terms.
For once, he did not call them punishment.
