Chapter 8 - William Arrives

William’s sedan appeared at the end of the driveway just after nine.
He parked beside the moving truck and climbed out slowly.
At seventy-two, he still carried himself like the man who once directed construction crews with a single look.
Ryan immediately walked toward him.
“Tell them.”
William looked at the officers, Claire, the movers, and the new lock.
His confidence weakened.
“Why are police here?”
Claire held up her phone.
“Because Ryan threatened to force me out.”
William frowned at Ryan.
“I told you to handle this quietly.”
Every body camera captured the sentence.
Ryan looked stunned.
“Dad.”
The lead officer stepped closer.
“What exactly did you ask your son to handle?”
William glanced at Claire.
“It’s a family arrangement.”
“Who owns this house?”
William hesitated.
“Claire’s name is on the deed.”
Ryan’s face hardened.
“You said the papers fixed that.”
William lowered his voice.
“I said they would.”
Claire felt something inside her settle.
Her father knew.
Perhaps not every detail.
But he knew Ryan intended to take control before ownership was legally established.
“Did you sign a document last night?” Claire asked.
William avoided her eyes.
“I signed a temporary authorization.”
“You had no authority to give one.”
“You gave me a key.”
“A guest key is not ownership.”
William looked offended.
“I am your father.”

Claire replied:
“That is a relationship, not a deed.”
