Chapter 6 - The Father’s Permission
The officers separated Claire and Ryan while they reviewed identification.
Ryan continued insisting William had approved everything.
The lead officer asked whether William owned the house.
“He has always controlled it,” Ryan answered.
“That was not the question.”
Ryan looked toward Claire.
“Our father gave her the money.”
Claire spoke immediately.
“No, he didn’t.”
Ryan smiled.
“Tell them where your first contract came from.”
William had introduced Claire to one hotel investor years earlier.
Ryan often transformed that introduction into the claim that their father created Claire’s company.
The officer asked for documents.
Ryan finally opened his folder.
Inside was a signed letter from William.
It stated that Ryan had permission to occupy, manage, and secure the lake house.
It did not prove William owned anything.
Claire watched Ryan read it again.
For the first time, he seemed to understand the weakness.
The officer handed it back.
“This does not authorize entry into property owned by someone else.”
Ryan’s jaw tightened.
“My father owns it through family equity.”
Claire almost laughed.
There was no such legal category.
Ryan had relied on confidence and expected everyone else to surrender before asking questions.
That strategy had worked for him his entire life.
But body cameras did not care how certain he sounded.
The lead officer asked Claire whether Ryan had permission to enter.
“No.”
Ryan turned toward her.
“You’re really doing this in front of police?”
