Chapter 9 - The Second Page
Maya joined them on the porch carrying a document case.
She identified herself to the officers and asked William one question.
“Did you sign a blank second page?”
William looked toward Ryan.
Ryan immediately answered for him.
“No.”
Maya watched William.
“I asked your father.”
William’s fingers trembled.
Ryan had brought papers to his home the previous evening.
He said they were needed to transfer utility responsibility and protect the property from Claire’s “financial instability.”
Claire had never missed a payment.
William admitted the first page described temporary management authority.
He did not fully read the second page.
Ryan told him it repeated the same terms.
“Was it blank when you signed?” Maya asked.
William whispered:
“Partially.”
Ryan stepped forward.
“You knew what it was.”
William turned on him.
“You said Claire agreed.”
The family story split open in front of the officers.
Ryan claimed William initiated the transfer.
William claimed Ryan said Claire had consented.
Neither had contacted Claire.
Neither possessed legal ownership.
Yet both expected her to leave.
Maya opened the cream envelope but kept the text turned away from the camera.
“The county rejected the first filing.”
Ryan’s face lost color.
William looked confused.
“What first filing?”

“The one containing Claire’s forged signature.”
