Chapter 4 - The House Claire Built

Claire bought the lake house after her company secured its first major hotel contract.
She was thirty-two.
For years, she had lived beneath Ryan’s shadow.
He was the confident son.
The athlete.
The child their father introduced first.
Claire was the quiet daughter who fixed problems without announcing them.
When William’s construction company nearly failed, Claire designed a commercial property for free.
When Ryan lost his sales job, Claire paid his rent for four months.
When their mother became ill, Claire reorganized her entire life to manage appointments.
Ryan visited when photographs were being taken.
After their mother died, William became increasingly dependent on Ryan.
Ryan flattered him.
Agreed with him.
Repeated that Claire had become arrogant because of her success.
The lake house was William’s favorite place.
Claire gave him a guest key and allowed him to stay whenever he wanted.
Ryan interpreted access as ownership.
He hosted parties there without permission.
Left doors unlocked.
Stored a boat beside the dock.
When Claire objected, William said:
“He’s your brother.”
That sentence ended nearly every dispute.
Six months before the moving truck appeared, Ryan began asking about the deed.
Claire refused to discuss it.
Then William asked whether she would “keep the house in the family.”
“It is in the family,” Claire answered.
William frowned.
“You know what I mean.”
She did.
He meant the house should eventually belong to Ryan.
May you like
Not because Ryan had paid for it.
Because William believed property passed more naturally through a son.
