Chapter 13 - The Hidden Recording
Maya asked Claire for permission to play another audio file.
It came from Claire’s doorbell camera two nights earlier.
Ryan and William stood outside after Claire had left for a business dinner.
They believed the camera was inactive because the porch light was off.
Ryan said:
“Once my things are in, she won’t drag this into court.”
William answered:
“She’ll be angry.”
“She gets over things.”
“What if she checks the deed?”
“Evan said possession gives us leverage.”
William remained silent.
Then Ryan added:
“You said she owes you.”
William replied:
“She does.”
Claire listened without moving.
For years, William had treated every opportunity he gave her as a debt.
The introduction to her first investor.
The use of his old office during her first year.
Advice she had not requested.
In his mind, the lake house was repayment.
Not a gift.
Not support.
A future claim.
The lead officer asked William whether the recording was authentic.
William did not deny it.
Claire felt grief, but not surprise.
