Chapter 3 - The Voicemail

The voicemail had arrived at 11:42 the previous night.

Ryan’s voice was controlled at first.

“Dad signed the house over. You need to have your personal things out before morning.”

Then his tone hardened.

“If you make this difficult, I’ll have you removed.”

Claire listened twice.

She saved the file to three locations.

Then she called her attorney, Maya Collins.

Maya had represented Claire when she purchased the lake house.

She still had the original closing documents.

“Did William ever own any percentage of the property?” Maya asked.

“No.”

“Did you sign a transfer?”

“No.”

“Did you authorize Ryan to enter?”

“No.”

Maya’s voice became sharp.

“Then do not confront him alone.”

Claire wanted to believe Ryan was bluffing.

But twenty minutes later, her father called.

William sounded tired.

“Let your brother use the house for a while.”

“Did you tell him you gave it to him?”

Silence.

“Dad?”

“He needs a fresh start.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

William exhaled.

“Family should not fight over property.”

Claire looked around the living room she had designed, financed, and maintained.

Ryan had turned William’s vague permission into a claim of ownership.

“Did you sign something?”

Another silence.

Then William said:

“I signed what was necessary to keep peace.”

The call ended before Claire could ask what that meant.

Maya arranged for the locks to be changed before sunrise.

She also contacted police to prevent a forced entry.

By dawn, Claire had one question.

What had her father signed?

And why had Ryan sounded so certain it would be enough?
