Chapter 1 - The Gun Hit the Floor First

“You took my wife!”
Victor Lang charged through the shattered front doorway with a black handgun raised toward Martha.
He never reached her.
Lauren Hayes was already moving.
Her left hand struck Victor’s gun wrist outward as her shoulder drove into the center of his chest. The weapon spun free, struck the polished wooden floor, and slid beneath scattered family photographs.
Victor’s expression changed before his body did.
He had expected fear.
Instead, Lauren hooked one boot behind his ankle, shifted her weight forward, and drove him chest-first to the floor without letting his head strike the wood.
Martha recoiled against the wall in her teal robe, clutching a small black phone with both trembling hands.
Lauren dropped one knee beside Victor’s shoulder and pinned his wrist behind his back.
“You brought a gun into my house.”
Victor twisted violently.
Lauren did not.
Her posture remained balanced.
Controlled.
Almost mechanical.
His rage turned into stunned confusion.
“What the hell are you?”
Lauren tightened the hold just enough to stop him from rising.
Then Martha saw Victor’s free hand sliding toward the metal pry bar among the scattered divorce papers.
“Lauren—behind your hand!”
Without looking away from Victor, Lauren trapped his forearm beneath her boot and kicked the pry bar across the room.
It struck the baseboard and stopped.
The young man crouched against the far wall kept both hands raised.
Nobody moved.
Then the lead detective stepped carefully through the broken doorway.
Two officers followed with their weapons lowered.
Lauren immediately eased the pressure on Victor’s wrist without releasing control.
The detective studied her stance.
Then her eyes dropped to the torn edge of Lauren’s tactical sleeve.
Beneath it was a faded Naval Special Warfare insignia.
Victor turned his bruised face just enough to look up at Lauren.
For the first time since breaking into the house, he looked afraid.
Lauren leaned closer.
“You threatened the wrong daughter.”
The detective froze.
She recognized the insignia.
May you like
And, judging by her expression, she recognized Lauren too.
👉 Victor thought he had broken into the home of a frightened woman and her civilian daughter—but the detective knew Lauren Hayes had once survived far worse men than him.
