Chapter 8 - The Second Phone
Victor carried two phones.
The first contained ordinary calls.
Business contacts.
Family messages.
Threats carefully worded to sound emotional rather than criminal.
The second phone was encrypted.
Technicians opened it the next morning.
Inside were photographs of Lauren’s home.
Martha entering the courthouse.
Noah visiting the divorce attorney.
Claire leaving the police station.
Victor had followed everyone connected to Martha.
But the most troubling files concerned Lauren.
A list of former Navy personnel.
A photograph of the faded insignia.
A copy of an article about the overseas extraction, with Lauren’s name omitted.
Messages with a contact saved only as Sable.
Victor wrote:
She is not logistics.
Sable replied:
Let it go.
Victor:
I need leverage.
Sable:
You do not understand what you are touching.
Victor:
Then explain it.
The final message arrived twenty minutes before the break-in.
The investigator is inside. Documents are being shown now.
That message exposed the source of the warning.
Someone knew Noah’s location.
Claire questioned the divorce attorney’s staff.
The office receptionist denied leaking information.
The paralegal did too.
Only four people knew Noah would deliver the documents.
Martha.
Lauren.
The attorney.
And Noah’s contact at the bank.
The bank employee was named Evan Cross.
Former Navy intelligence analyst.
Discharged nine years earlier.
Claire showed Lauren his photograph.
Lauren’s face became still.
“You know him.”
“Yes.”
“From where?”
“The operation.”
“Was he the source you protected?”
Lauren did not answer.
She did not need to.
Evan Cross was the communications analyst who warned Lauren the extraction route was compromised.
He had secretly redirected her.
When the mission failed, he denied contact.
Lauren absorbed the blame to protect him from prosecution.
Now he was feeding Victor information.
Claire leaned back.
“You sacrificed your career for him.”
Lauren looked toward the window.
