Chapter 12 - The Warehouse

Police surrounded the marine warehouse at 11:31 a.m.

Evan Cross stood inside beside an open laptop.

A portable transmitter blinked on the desk.

Lauren entered alone after Claire secured authorization.

“No weapons,” Claire warned.

Lauren lifted both hands.

“I don’t need one.”

The warehouse smelled of salt, oil, and old wood.

Evan appeared behind a stack of shipping crates.

He looked exhausted.

“You should not be here.”

“You sent Victor Noah’s location.”

Evan lowered his eyes.

“He had the recording.”

“You gave him more than one location.”

“He threatened to release everything.”

“So you helped him terrorize my mother?”

“I thought he only wanted proof she was hiding assets.”

“He brought a gun.”

Evan flinched.

Lauren moved closer.

“What happens at noon?”

“The file uploads to six news outlets and two military forums.”

“Stop it.”

“I can’t without Victor’s code.”

Lauren looked at the laptop.

“That’s a lie.”

Evan stared at her.

“You always built redundancies.”

His face cracked.

For years, Lauren had protected him.

Now he could not lie to her convincingly.

“There’s a manual cancel,” she said.

“Yes.”

“Use it.”

“If I do, they’ll arrest me.”

“They may.”

“I have a family.”

“My mother almost died because you wanted to protect yours.”

Evan’s breathing shook.

Lauren stepped closer.

“You warned me that night.”

“I was afraid.”

“You let me take the blame.”

“I know.”

“You watched my career end.”

“I know.”

“And when Victor found you, you chose silence again.”

Evan looked toward the laptop.

The timer read 11:54.

“I never meant for him to hurt anyone.”

Lauren’s eyes became cold.

“Neither did you mean to let that team enter an ambush.”

Evan recoiled.

She continued.

“Intent is what people hide behind when they refuse responsibility.”

The timer reached 11:56.

Evan typed a command.

A password field appeared.

He entered twelve characters.

The upload stopped.

Outside, Claire released a breath.

Evan turned around and raised his hands.

Lauren did not thank him.

He had not become brave.

He had simply stopped making others pay for his fear.

👉 Evan stopped the leak—but the recording now gave investigators a path toward the officer who had sent Lauren’s team into an ambush.
