Chapter 7 - Why Lauren Left the Navy

Lauren did not leave the Navy because of injury.

That was only the official explanation.

Eleven years earlier, she served as a logistics specialist attached to an elite maritime unit.

Her work involved transport routes, equipment caches, emergency extraction planning, and secure communications.

She was not supposed to enter combat zones.

But support personnel often worked closer to danger than records admitted.

During one overseas operation, the primary extraction team was ambushed.

Lauren diverted a supply vehicle, entered the compromised area, and helped recover two wounded operators.

One survived.

One did not.

The mission report praised her judgment.

The internal review blamed her for acting outside assignment parameters.

The officer who approved the diversion denied giving the order.

Lauren refused to identify the communication source that warned her the extraction route was compromised.

She protected someone.

And paid for it.

Her clearance was suspended.

Her career stalled.

Then came the injury.

A damaged shoulder.

Two months of rehabilitation.

An honorable discharge.

No public scandal.

No recognition.

Only silence.

Lauren built a civilian life near Virginia Beach.

She consulted on shipping and emergency supply systems.

She visited Martha.

She avoided relationships.

She kept exits visible in every room.

Victor mocked her habits.

He called her paranoid.

Once, during Thanksgiving, he asked whether she had ever even seen combat.

Lauren replied, “No.”

It was easier.

Now Claire stood in the damaged living room, looking at the insignia.

“Does Victor know your record was sealed?”

“He knows I don’t discuss it.”

“Could he have researched you?”

“Anyone can research.”

Claire handed her a recovered photograph.

It had been found inside Victor’s jacket.

The image showed Lauren leaving a federal building three months earlier.

She had gone there to assist with a classified procurement review.

Someone had followed her.

On the back, Victor had written:

Find out what she really did.

Lauren’s eyes hardened.

“He wasn’t only watching my mother.”

“No,” Claire said. “He was watching you.”

👉 Victor’s obsession with Martha had expanded into an investigation of Lauren—and he had already contacted someone connected to her sealed military past.
