Chapter 3 - The First Time Victor Came to the Door

Victor arrived wearing a suit.

No shouting.

No threats.

He carried flowers.

Lauren watched him through the security camera.

He stood perfectly still beneath the porch light.

“Martha,” he called. “I know you’re inside.”

Martha froze behind the living room wall.

Lauren pressed the intercom.

“You need to leave.”

Victor looked directly at the camera.

“This is a marriage.”

“This is private property.”

“You have no right to interfere.”

“The court disagrees.”

His face barely changed.

But his fingers tightened around the flower stems.

“I only want to talk.”

“No.”

“Martha is confused.”

Lauren’s eyes hardened.

“She is afraid.”

“She’s emotional.”

“She has a protective order.”

Victor’s smile disappeared.

“You think a piece of paper makes you powerful?”

Lauren saved the recording.

“I think your next sentence may become evidence.”

The smile returned.

Thinner now.

“You always were dramatic.”

Victor knew Lauren had served in the Navy.

He believed she had worked in supply management.

That was the story Martha knew.

That was the story Lauren preferred.

She never discussed the years before logistics.

She did not display photographs.

She kept medals in a locked box.

Victor saw only a woman with an office job and an old shoulder injury.

He stepped closer to the camera.

“You cannot keep a wife from her husband.”

“Martha chooses where she lives.”

“She doesn’t know what she wants.”

Lauren’s voice went cold.

“That sentence is why you’re standing outside.”

Victor dropped the flowers.

Then he left.

The police arrived twelve minutes later.

He was already gone.

The responding officer documented the violation but said there had been no direct threat.

Lauren disagreed.

Everything about Victor was a threat.

The calm voice.

The tailored suit.

The flowers placed like an offering.

He wanted Martha to understand he could reach her without losing control.

The next morning, the flowers were gone.

In their place lay a photograph of Martha sleeping.
