Chapter 17 - The Grand Jury

Martha entered the federal building wearing a simple navy dress.

Lauren waited in the hallway.

Claire stood near the elevator.

Noah arrived with the original financial records.

Evan Cross entered through another secured entrance under cooperation terms.

Inside, prosecutors presented years of transactions.

Shell companies.

Property transfers.

Defense consulting payments.

Bank accounts created under Martha’s name.

Martha answered every question carefully.

When she did not know, she said so.

When she remembered, she gave exact details.

The dinner menu.

The wine bottle.

Keene’s naval pin.

The sentence he used about her property.

A beautiful asset.

The phrase mattered.

It matched language in an email Keene sent Victor the next morning.

The grand jury heard Lauren’s mission recording.

The warning.

The compromised route.

The internal leak.

The unofficial extraction.

Then they saw Keene’s payments to a foreign logistics company later connected to the hostile group that attacked the convoy.

The implication was devastating.

Keene had not simply mishandled intelligence.

He may have sold operational information.

Lauren waited outside for six hours.

When Martha emerged, she looked exhausted.

“Did they believe you?” Lauren asked.

Martha nodded.

“I believed me.”

Lauren’s face softened.

That mattered more.

Within twenty-four hours, federal agents arrested Keene.

His attorneys denied all allegations.

But the original route maps and offshore transfers were difficult to explain.

Victor was charged with conspiracy, money laundering, unlawful surveillance, armed burglary, and attempted coercion of a witness.

Evan faced lesser charges for obstruction and unauthorized disclosure.

Lauren’s military record was formally reopened.

Not to prosecute her.

To correct it.

👉 Martha’s testimony exposed the network—but Lauren still had to decide whether she wanted the military to publicly restore the honor it had once taken.
