Chapter 11 - The File Lauren Feared

Lauren agreed to hear the recording.

Claire played it inside a secure interview room.

Static came first.

Then Evan Cross’s younger voice.

“Route Blue is compromised.”

Lauren answered.

“Source?”

“Intercepted traffic. Two hostile teams.”

“The extraction unit is already moving.”

“I know.”

“Did command receive it?”

“No.”

“Why?”

A pause.

Then Evan whispered, “Because someone inside command is feeding the route.”

Lauren’s breathing stopped.

She remembered the conversation.

But not the next line.

Evan continued.

“If I transmit officially, they will see I caught it.”

“Send it.”

“I can’t.”

“Then give me an alternate route.”

Evan did.

Lauren used the route.

But before the team reached it, the convoy was hit.

The attack came from a position only senior command knew.

Afterward, investigators focused on Lauren’s unauthorized entry.

Not the compromised route.

Not the internal leak.

The recording proved Lauren had not acted recklessly.

She entered because she knew the extraction team had been sent into an ambush.

Claire stopped the audio.

“This clears you.”

“No.”

“It explains your decision.”

“It identifies Evan.”

“He already identified himself.”

Lauren stared at the table.

“Why would he give this to Victor?”

“Maybe Victor found him.”

“Evan knows what release would trigger.”

“Which is?”

“A counterintelligence review.”

Claire understood.

The recording did not only clear Lauren.

It revealed a possible traitor inside the command structure.

Evan had hidden it for years.

If exposed, investigators would ask why he withheld it.

He could face charges.

Victor had obtained the file and used it to control him.

Lauren stood.

“We need to find him before noon.”

Claire nodded.

“Do you know where he would go?”

Lauren looked at the waveform on the screen.

Evan had once designed emergency fallback locations.

Places chosen for anonymity.

No cameras.

Multiple exits.

Near communication infrastructure.

She remembered one near the Chesapeake waterfront.

An abandoned marine supply warehouse.

Claire called tactical units.

Lauren reached for her vest.

Claire blocked her path.

“You’re not police.”

“He will respond to me.”

“He betrayed you.”

“He’s still afraid.”

Claire hesitated.

Lauren’s voice lowered.

May you like

“Fear is why people make deals with men like Victor.”

👉 The recording could restore Lauren’s honor—but only if she reached the man who had hidden it before Victor’s timed release destroyed them both.
