Chapter 13 - The Officer Behind the Route

The counterintelligence investigation reopened quietly.
The compromised route traced back to Rear Admiral Thomas Keene.
At the time of the operation, Keene oversaw maritime logistics in the region.
He later retired with honors.
He became a defense consultant.
One of his civilian clients was a shipping company connected to Victor’s hidden properties.
Lauren stared at the corporate records.
“Victor knew him.”
Claire nodded.
“Through business.”
Victor had not accidentally found Lauren’s military past.
Keene had given him enough information to identify her.
In exchange, Victor helped move money through real estate holdings.
The divorce investigation threatened those assets.
Martha’s hidden financial records could expose more than marital theft.
They could reveal payments linked to Keene.
Victor broke into the house not only to reclaim Martha.
He wanted Noah’s documents.
The handgun was insurance.
The pry bar was for the door.
The scattered divorce papers contained transaction numbers matching offshore transfers.
Claire placed one before Lauren.
“You were right to stop him.”
Lauren looked at the photograph of Victor entering with the gun.
“I did not know any of this when I moved.”
“You knew he was a threat.”
“That was enough.”
Martha listened from the other side of the table.
Her face went pale.
“My marriage was connected to this?”
“Victor used your assets,” Claire said. “Possibly without your knowledge.”
Martha looked ashamed.
Lauren reached across the table.
“Look at me.”
Martha did.
“You did not create his crimes.”
“I signed papers.”
“Because he deceived you.”
“I should have read them.”
“He trained you not to question him.”
Martha’s lips trembled.
For years, Victor told her she was incompetent with money.
Then he used her signature.
Her fear.
Her trust.
Now those signatures might help federal investigators trace the entire network.

The woman Victor dismissed as weak had become the witness who could dismantle everything.
👉 Victor had used Martha’s name to hide illicit money—but her memory of one dinner with Admiral Keene could connect the conspiracy.
