Chapter 25 - The Woman at the Desk

The caller’s name was Rebecca.

She was forty-two.

Her husband controlled her medication, money, and transportation.

She had never reported him.

Martha listened.

Did not interrupt.

Did not tell Rebecca to leave immediately.

She remembered how impossible those words once felt.

Instead, she asked, “Are you safe during this call?”

“For now.”

“Do you have somewhere he cannot access?”

“My sister’s house.”

“Does he know the address?”

“No.”

Martha wrote carefully.

Then Rebecca whispered, “He says nobody will believe me because he is respected.”

Martha looked at the blue ceramic bowl on her desk.

The only object she kept from Victor’s house.

“I believe you.”

Rebecca began crying.

Martha connected her with an attorney and emergency housing coordinator.

That evening, she told Lauren.

“I did not save her.”

Lauren nodded.

“You listened.”

“It doesn’t feel like enough.”

“It was enough when I answered your call.”

Martha looked at her daughter.

The truth settled between them.

No one rescued either woman in a single dramatic moment.

Lauren stopped the gun.

Police secured the house.

Courts punished Victor.

But freedom had begun earlier.

With a call answered.

A door opened.

A sentence believed.

Lauren’s strength had never been the takedown captured on video.

It was the refusal to send Martha back.

Martha’s strength was not surviving Victor’s trial.

It was deciding that fear would no longer make her choices.

They had both mistaken protection for something one person gave another.

Now they understood.

Protection could be offered.

But freedom had to be chosen repeatedly.

👉 Martha was helping other women find the door—but Lauren still had one final object from the break-in she had not been willing to release.
