Chapter 14 - The Dinner Martha Remembered
The dinner happened four years earlier.
Victor called it a business celebration.
Admiral Keene arrived wearing a dark suit and a silver naval pin.
Martha remembered because Victor behaved differently around him.
Quieter.
Eager.
Keene brought a bottle of wine and a leather folder.
After dinner, the men entered Victor’s study.
Martha carried coffee inside.
Victor immediately closed a document.
Keene smiled at her.
“Your husband says the beach property is in your name.”
Martha nodded.
“It belonged to my parents.”
“A beautiful asset.”
Victor answered for her.
“We are restructuring ownership.”
Martha did not understand.
Later that night, Victor asked her to sign several pages.
He said they concerned taxes.
She signed.
One document transferred partial control of the property to a holding company.
Another secured a loan against it.
The borrowed money disappeared into Keene’s network.
Martha remembered something else.
A photograph on Victor’s desk.
A military woman beside a damaged transport vehicle.
Only part of her face was visible.
Wet dark hair.
Blood near her temple.
A faded insignia.
Lauren.
Martha asked why Victor had her daughter’s photograph.
He snatched it away.
“Old Navy archive.”
She believed him.
Now investigators searched Victor’s study.
Behind a false wall panel, they found the original mission file.
Photographs.
Route maps.
Payments.
And a list of personnel Keene monitored after the failed operation.
Lauren’s name appeared beside one word:
Liability.
Keene feared she would eventually ask the right questions.
Victor offered a civilian solution.
Control her through Martha.
Keep her occupied with family conflict.
Threaten exposure if necessary.
Lauren read the notes.
Victor had not simply married Martha for money.
Once he learned she was Lauren’s mother, the marriage became strategically useful.
The realization devastated Martha.
“He chose me because of you.”
Lauren shook her head.
“He abused you because of him.”
Martha looked confused.
“Keene.”
Lauren pointed toward the file.
“Victor chose cruelty. Keene gave him a reason. Neither makes you responsible.”
The federal team secured the documents.
