Chapter 6 - The Insignia Claire Recognized

Claire had seen Lauren Hayes once before.
Not in person.
In a classified briefing eight years earlier.
Claire had been a military investigator before joining the Virginia Beach Police Department.
A grainy photograph appeared during a training session about an overseas hostage recovery.
The operation involved a small Naval Special Warfare support cell attached to a direct-action unit.
The briefing never listed full names.
Only call signs.
One image showed a dark-haired woman carrying an injured service member through smoke.
Her sleeve bore the same faded insignia.
Claire remembered the instructor’s words.
“She was not assigned as an assaulter. She entered anyway when the extraction route collapsed.”
The woman in the photograph had been listed as L. Hayes.
Claire looked at Lauren kneeling near her mother.
Wet hair.
Tactical clothing.
Controlled breathing.
No wasted motion.
The way she had disarmed Victor was not learned in a weekend self-defense class.
Claire approached quietly.
“You told the responding officer you work in logistics.”
“I do.”
“Now?”
“Yes.”
“And before?”
Lauren’s jaw tightened.
“My record is sealed.”
Claire lowered her voice.
“I’m not trying to expose you.”
“Then don’t.”
“I need to explain how an armed man ended up on the floor without a gunshot.”
“You have video.”
The security system had captured the break-in.
Victor entering with the weapon raised.
Lauren redirecting the muzzle.
The controlled takedown.
The blocked attempt to reach the pry bar.
No excessive force.
No retaliation.
Everything clear.
Claire nodded.
“The video protects you.”
“Then my past is irrelevant.”
Claire glanced toward Martha.
“Unless Victor knew it.”
Lauren’s eyes shifted.
The first visible sign of concern.
“What do you mean?”
“He walked into your house armed. Either he believed you were harmless or he wanted to force you to reveal something.”
Lauren looked toward Victor.
He was being lifted carefully by two officers.
His eyes met hers.
He smiled.
Not arrogantly.
Knowingly.
Lauren understood.
Victor had not been shocked that she was trained.
May you like
He had been shocked by how much she revealed.
👉 Victor may have attacked Martha for control—but he had also forced Lauren to expose a past she had spent years hiding.
