Then Lauren took the stand.
Victor stared at her.
The prosecutor asked what she saw when the door broke.
“A firearm pointed toward my mother.”
“What did you intend?”
“To move the weapon away from her.”
“Did you intend to injure Mr. Lang?”
“No.”
“Why did you pin him?”
“He continued resisting.”
“Why did you release pressure when police arrived?”
“The threat was controlled.”
Victor’s attorney stood.
“Ms. Hayes, you have advanced military training.”
“Yes.”
“You could have killed my client.”
“Yes.”
The courtroom became silent.
The attorney hesitated.
Lauren continued.
“I chose not to.”
That answer ended the defense’s attempt to portray Victor as the victim.
Victor testified against advice.
He called Martha ungrateful.
Noah dishonest.
Evan weak.
Lauren unstable.
He blamed everyone.

“Why did you bring a loaded handgun into your estranged wife’s daughter’s house?”
