Chapter 4 - The Man Against the Wall

The young man crouched inside Lauren’s living room during the break-in was named Noah Reed.

He was not a burglar.

He was a private investigator hired by Martha’s divorce attorney.

Victor had hidden assets.

Multiple bank accounts.

Two rental properties.

A storage unit registered under a dead relative’s name.

Noah had spent three weeks tracing the records.

The morning of the attack, he arrived with a folder containing photographs, account statements, and a copy of Victor’s second phone records.

Martha sat at the dining table reading the documents.

Her hands began to shake.

Victor had been moving money for years.

Money Martha believed had been lost in investments.

Money from the sale of her late parents’ home.

Money from an insurance payment she never knew existed.

“He stole from me,” she whispered.

Noah corrected her carefully.

“He controlled assets that appear jointly owned. Your attorney will determine the exact legal violation.”

Martha stared at one photograph.

Victor stood outside a storage facility beside a woman in a burgundy coat.

“Who is she?”

Noah hesitated.

“Her name is Denise Walker.”

Lauren stood near the window.

“What connection?”

“She manages one of the shell companies.”

Martha looked up.

“Is she sleeping with him?”

Noah said nothing.

That silence was enough.

Martha pressed both hands against the table.

Lauren moved beside her.

“You don’t have to read everything now.”

“Yes, I do.”

The front windows shook.

All three of them froze.

A second impact struck the door.

Wood splintered inward.

Noah dropped the folder.

Lauren crossed the living room before the third strike.

Victor’s face appeared through the broken frame.

A metal pry bar was in his hand.

A black handgun was visible at his waist.

Martha raised the emergency phone.

Victor kicked the door again.

The frame broke.

Noah backed toward the wall and raised both hands.

Lauren pulled on the protective vest she had left over a chair.

She did not reach for a gun.

She stepped between the doorway and her mother.

“Call the detective,” she said.

Then Victor came through the door.

👉 Victor had broken in moments after Martha discovered his hidden money—meaning someone had warned him Noah was inside the house.
