Chapter 5 - The Warning Call
Detective Claire Dalton took command of the scene.
Victor remained face-down while officers secured the gun and pry bar.
Lauren moved away only after being instructed twice.
Her breathing was steady.
Her eyes were not.
She watched every hand.
Every doorway.
Every movement near Martha.
Claire noticed.
“Ms. Hayes, are you injured?”
“No.”
“Your face is scratched.”
“Door debris.”
“Your clothes are wet.”
“I came through the backyard drainage ditch.”
Claire looked toward the rear windows.
“Why?”
Lauren nodded toward Noah.
“He called six minutes before Victor arrived.”
Noah lowered his hands once officers cleared him.
“I saw Victor’s car at the end of the street.”
“You were inside,” Claire said.
“I checked the camera feed.”
Lauren continued.
“The front system went offline. I exited through the rear, checked the perimeter, and returned when I heard the first impact.”
Claire studied her.
Most civilians did not say perimeter.
They said yard.
Or outside.
She looked again at the insignia beneath Lauren’s torn sleeve.
“Where did you serve?”
“Navy.”
“What unit?”
“Logistics.”
Claire’s eyes narrowed.
She knew that was not the full answer.
An officer placed Victor’s phone inside an evidence bag.
Its screen lit up.
A call log showed an incoming call two minutes before the break-in.
Unknown number.
Twenty-three seconds.
Noah pointed toward it.
“That’s the warning.”
Victor lifted his face from the floor.
“I want an attorney.”
Claire nodded.
“You’ll have one.”
Victor looked at Martha.
“This is your fault.”
Martha flinched.
Lauren stepped forward.
Claire raised one palm.
“Ms. Hayes.”
Lauren stopped immediately.
Victor smiled despite the bloodless pressure mark on his cheek.
He still believed Martha was listening.
Still believed she would feel guilt.
Martha looked down at him.
Then at the shattered doorway.
The scattered photographs.
The handgun beneath an officer’s boot.
“No,” she said.
Victor’s smile faded.
“This is yours.”
Claire heard it.
So did Lauren.
