Chapter 18 - The Offer from the Navy
A Navy review board contacted Lauren.
They offered to amend her service record.
Remove the reprimand.
Restore the commendation recommendation.
Acknowledge that she acted on credible intelligence during the failed extraction.
They also offered a private ceremony.
Lauren refused.
The official on the call sounded surprised.
“You are entitled to recognition.”
“I was entitled to a fair investigation eleven years ago.”
“We are attempting to correct that.”
“Then correct the records of the people blamed with me.”
The official paused.
Two enlisted sailors had received career-ending evaluations after the mission.
One had left the service.
The other died before his record could be reviewed.
Lauren asked that both cases be reopened.
She also demanded the final report identify the command failures that ignored Evan’s warning.
“We cannot guarantee all findings will be public.”
“Then no ceremony.”
Martha listened from the kitchen.
After the call ended, she asked, “Don’t you want your name cleared?”
“It will be.”
“You deserve the medal.”
Lauren shook her head.
“I deserved the truth when it mattered.”
Martha looked at her daughter.
“You still think accepting something means they own you.”
Lauren did not answer.
Martha continued.
“You spent years letting silence punish you because you thought silence protected everyone else.”
The words landed harder than Lauren expected.
“Maybe letting them say what you did is not for them,” Martha said. “Maybe it is for the people who thought they failed beside you.”
Lauren looked toward the locked box containing her old uniform.
She had not opened it in nine years.
That night, she removed the lid.
The fabric smelled faintly of storage.
Beneath the folded uniform lay a photograph of the extraction team.
One man had his arm around her shoulder.
Another made a ridiculous face.
They looked alive.
Unaware of what waited.
Lauren sat on the floor until dawn.
Then she called the review board.
