Chapter 9 - Martha Refuses to Hide

Martha spent the night in a secured hotel room.

Lauren checked the windows twice.

Then the closet.

Then the adjoining door.

Martha watched her.

“You don’t have to keep doing that.”

“Yes, I do.”

“Victor is in custody.”

“Victor had help.”

Martha sat on the edge of the bed.

Her bruised face looked older beneath the cold lamp.

“Did I ruin your life?”

Lauren turned.

“What?”

“You left the Navy. You came back here. Then I stayed with Victor. Now this.”

Lauren crossed the room.

“None of that is yours.”

“I should have left him sooner.”

“You left when you could.”

“I kept believing apologies.”

Lauren knelt in front of her.

“That does not make you responsible for what he chose.”

Martha looked at her daughter’s scratched face.

“Does that apply to you?”

Lauren said nothing.

Martha understood.

“You protected that man, didn’t you? The one helping Victor.”

“I protected the mission.”

“You protected him.”

Lauren stood.

“I made a decision.”

“And you’ve punished yourself for it ever since.”

Lauren’s jaw tightened.

Martha reached for the black phone.

“I want to make a statement.”

“To police?”

“To everyone.”

Lauren shook her head.

“Public statements can interfere with the case.”

“Then to the attorney. The full truth. The marriage. The money. The threats.”

“You already told them.”

“Not everything.”

Lauren looked at her mother.

Martha swallowed.

“Victor said he knew why you left the Navy.”

The room became still.

“When?”

“Months ago.”

“What exactly did he say?”

“He said you were not the hero I thought you were.”

Lauren’s expression hardened.

“He told me if I divorced him, he would make your military record public.”

Martha began crying.

“I stayed longer because I thought I was protecting you.”

Lauren closed her eyes.

Victor had controlled both women with opposite lies.

He told Martha that leaving would destroy Lauren.

He told Lauren that Martha was too frightened to survive without protection.

Each believed silence helped the other.

Victor depended on that silence.

Martha wiped her face.

“No more.”

👉 Martha had remained with Victor partly to protect Lauren—but now she was ready to expose the threat that connected the marriage to Lauren’s sealed file.
