Colonel Grant recognized the contractor names immediately.
As a younger officer, he had served with Clara’s father.
Thomas had trusted him.
Before dying, Thomas gave Grant a sealed instruction:
Protect Clara only when she uncovers the truth herself.
Grant had watched Evan’s business grow near Fort Briar.
He suspected corruption but lacked evidence.
When Clara called from the hospital, Grant arrived personally because he knew Margaret’s collapse might be connected to Thomas’s old investigation.
The sealed military-gray envelope in Clara’s folder contained authorization for a reopened inquiry.
The data drive connected Evan’s current financial crimes to the old contractor network.
Grant had not intervened only as Clara’s commander.
He was fulfilling a promise made to her father.
Clara confronted him.
“You knew my family was in danger.”
“I knew there was a possibility.”
“You let us live beside it.”
“Your father demanded evidence, not suspicion.”
Clara understood the legal reasoning.
Emotionally, she struggled to forgive it.
Grant accepted her anger.
Then he revealed the old investigation included one additional name.
