Chapter 2 - Thirty-Eight Unanswered Calls
Clara had called Evan thirty-eight times that night.
Margaret had collapsed in her kitchen after complaining of chest pain and confusion.
Clara was stationed two hours away at Fort Briar when the emergency alert reached her.
She contacted Evan first.
He lived only fifteen minutes from Margaret’s house.
He did not answer.
Clara called again while driving toward the hospital.
Again.
And again.
At the thirty-second call, someone rejected it.
Not missed.
Rejected.
Clara arrived to find Margaret unconscious, with a neighbor holding pressure against a cut on her forehead.
The front door had been unlocked.
Drawers were open.
The small safe in Margaret’s bedroom had been pulled away from the wall.
Nothing obvious appeared stolen.
But the brass key Margaret always wore around her neck was missing.
Doctors discovered that Margaret had been given the wrong dosage of a prescribed medication.
The label on the bottle carried her name.
The pills inside did not match the prescription.
While Margaret underwent surgery, Clara received a video from an unknown number.
It showed Evan drinking wine with Madison in a private restaurant.
The timestamp placed him there during every unanswered call.
Clara recognized Madison.
She was the financial consultant Evan had repeatedly described as “just a client.”
The video ended with Evan sliding a folder across the table.
On top of it sat Margaret’s brass house key.
The affair hurt.
But the key changed everything.
