Chapter 17 - Evan’s Confession

Faced with the recordings, financial data, and Margaret’s hidden footage, Evan finally confessed.

He admitted searching the house.

Administering the pill.

Taking the metal box.

Stealing Margaret’s identity.

Moving her money.

Blackmailing Madison.

He denied planning Margaret’s death.

Clara listened through a glass interview-room wall.

Evan cried when he spoke about losing her.

But his confession revealed the truth.

He had not stopped because he loved Clara.

He stopped because he had been caught.

When asked why he ignored thirty-eight calls, he answered:

“If I went to the hospital, Clara would see the key.”

The key mattered more than Margaret’s life.

The evidence mattered more than his marriage.

His escape mattered more than every person he claimed to love.

Clara removed her wedding ring.

She did not throw it.

She placed it inside the evidence envelope.

One more object documenting what Evan had sacrificed for control.
