Chapter 4 - Madison’s Second Phone

The caller ID on Evan’s phone displayed Margaret’s name.
But Margaret’s real phone was inside Clara’s hospital folder.
It had been recovered beneath the kitchen table.
The device calling Evan belonged to someone else.
Madison.
When Clara repeated the question, Madison stopped pretending not to understand.
“It isn’t what you think.”
“That phone is using my mother’s identity.”
Evan stepped between them.
“Clara, this isn’t the place.”
“The place became relevant when my mother arrived here unconscious.”
Colonel Grant remained behind Clara, watching Evan’s hands.
Madison slowly held out her phone.
A second device remained hidden inside her denim jacket.
Clara noticed the outline.
“Give me the other one.”
Madison shook her head.
Evan’s expression sharpened.
“Don’t.”
That single word was not directed at Clara.
It was directed at Madison.
Madison’s fear turned into anger.
“You said she’d never connect it.”
Clara felt the air leave her chest.
Colonel Grant signaled hospital security.
Madison removed a small black phone.
The device used Margaret’s name, contact photograph, and number through an identity-masking application.
The recent calls included Evan, a bank manager, a property attorney, and a private care facility.

Someone had been impersonating Margaret.
And Evan had known.
