Chapter 5 - The Woman in the Restaurant
Madison claimed she had met Evan six months earlier.
He told her his marriage was ending.
He said Clara cared more about the Army than her family.
He described Margaret as wealthy, mentally unstable, and incapable of managing her affairs.
Madison worked in private asset restructuring.
Her job was to locate money, reduce tax exposure, and move ownership through trusts.
Evan asked her to help “protect” Margaret’s estate before Clara took control.
At first, Madison believed the request was legal.
Then Evan gave her copies of Margaret’s identification, medical records, and signature samples.
He wanted accounts opened remotely.
Madison refused.
Evan threatened to expose financial violations from one of her previous clients.
She began helping him.
The private dinners became an affair.
Madison told herself she was trapped.
Clara did not accept that excuse.
“You still sat with him while my mother was dying.”
“I didn’t know she was in the hospital.”
“You watched him reject my calls.”
Madison looked down.
That was true.
During the dinner, Clara’s name flashed repeatedly on Evan’s phone.
He silenced it.
When Madison asked whether something was wrong, he smiled.
