Chapter 3 - The House Key
Margaret’s brass key did not open her front door.
It opened a locked cabinet hidden behind a false wall in the basement.
Only Margaret and Clara knew it existed.
Margaret’s late husband had installed the cabinet decades earlier to protect military pension records, property deeds, and family documents.
Evan learned about it accidentally.
Two years earlier, he helped Margaret repair a burst pipe.
He saw her enter the basement carrying the key.
She refused to explain what it opened.
After that, Evan began asking questions.
Did Margaret own the house outright?
Did she have life insurance?
Was Clara the only beneficiary?
Clara thought he was trying to help with estate planning.
Now she understood he had been measuring what Margaret was worth.
When Margaret woke after surgery, she could barely speak.
She told Clara she had heard someone inside the house the night before her collapse.
A man moved through the basement.
Margaret called Evan because she believed he was nearby.
He answered once.
He told her she was confused and should return to bed.
Minutes later, she found him standing near the hidden cabinet.
“What are you doing here?” she asked.
Evan claimed Clara had sent him.
Margaret knew that was a lie.
She reached for her phone.
Evan took it from her hand.
Then everything became unclear.
She remembered a glass of water.
