Chapter 8 - The Black Data Drive

The small drive inside Clara’s folder came from Margaret’s kitchen.

A military police technician discovered it clipped behind the router.

Margaret did not recognize it.

The drive had recorded network traffic for months.

Someone installed it to capture passwords and communications from every device inside the house.

The files showed remote access from Evan’s laptop.

They also showed a second user.

The account name belonged to Madison.

She denied installing the device.

But her consulting software appeared throughout the logs.

Clara watched Madison’s face as investigators explained the evidence.

“You knew he was inside her accounts.”

“I knew he wanted financial access.”

“You helped him maintain it.”

“I thought Margaret had consented.”

“You created a phone in her name.”

Madison began crying.

Clara remained unmoved.

Tears did not change timestamps.

Madison finally admitted she had used Margaret’s identity to call financial institutions.

Evan sat beside her and supplied answers to security questions.

Mother’s maiden name.

First employer.

Childhood address.

Names of relatives.

Details only family would know.

The impersonation had been a partnership.

But Madison insisted Evan was hiding something from her too.

“He kept asking about a second recording,” she said.

Clara looked at the drive.

“What recording?”

Madison whispered, “The one your mother made before she collapsed.”
