Chapter 19 - Margaret’s Recovery

Margaret recovered slowly.

Some days, her hands shook.

Some nights, she woke believing Evan was still in the basement.

Clara stayed whenever duty allowed.

She did not treat her mother as fragile.

She treated her as someone healing from betrayal.

Margaret testified from a protected room.

She described Evan’s search, the pill, the phone, and the missing box.

When defense attorneys suggested confusion, she answered every question precisely.

Then she looked directly at Evan.

“You counted on my age making me unbelievable.”

Evan lowered his head.

Margaret continued.

“You mistook weakness in my body for weakness in my mind.”

Her testimony helped convict him.

Afterward, she asked Clara to sell the old house.

“The memories belong to me,” Margaret said. “The walls do not.”

The sale funded a legal assistance program for elderly victims of financial abuse.
