Chapter 7 - You Used Her Name

Clara placed the blurred financial statement in front of Evan during formal questioning.
“You used her name.”
Evan’s anger collapsed.
The statement showed transfers from three newly opened accounts belonging to Margaret Carter.
Margaret had never authorized them.
The accounts received loans against her house, retirement fund, and life-insurance policy.
Nearly two million dollars had moved through them.
Some money paid Evan’s business debts.
Some went to Madison’s consulting company.
The rest vanished into an account labeled Briar Recovery Services.
No such medical provider existed.
Evan claimed Margaret had agreed to help him.
Margaret denied it.
Her signatures appeared on every document.
The signatures looked perfect.
Too perfect.
A forensic examiner determined they had been generated from high-resolution scans.
Someone had collected signed birthday cards, checks, and medical forms to build a digital signature library.
Clara remembered Evan volunteering to organize Margaret’s paperwork after her husband died.
