Chapter 11 - The Sisters Evelyn Wanted to Break
Rachel placed the guardianship agreement between Chloe and me.
“Evelyn expected Clara to discover the pregnancy eventually,” she said. “This clause turned that discovery into leverage.”
If Chloe surrendered the child after I learned the truth, she lost the promised money.
If she fought me, she could claim a separate settlement for emotional damages and pregnancy expenses.
Evelyn had built conflict into the contract.
She wanted Chloe financially dependent and me emotionally unstable.
Chloe stared at her signature.
“I didn’t read all of it.”
“You signed away my child,” I said.
“I thought she was partly mine.”
“You knew whose eggs they used.”
Tears slid down her face.
“I was desperate.”
“So was I. I didn’t steal from you.”
That silenced her.
The guardian ad litem asked us each one question.
“What outcome protects Lily from being treated as property?”
I answered first.
“She deserves the truth. She deserves stability. And she deserves to know Chloe carried her, even though the pregnancy began through a crime.”
Chloe covered her mouth.
When her turn came, she said, “I don’t want money. I want to stay in her life.”
For the first time, she sounded honest.
Rachel proposed temporary shared medical decision-making during the pregnancy, with final custody determined after birth and psychological evaluations.
I agreed.
Chloe agreed too.
Evelyn’s attorney objected.
That revealed what she truly feared.
If Chloe and I stopped fighting, Evelyn’s plan collapsed.
The judge approved the arrangement.
Outside court, Chloe turned to me.
“I know I don’t deserve your trust.”
“No.”
“But I can help prove Julian knew about your mother.”
She had one more recording.
On it, Julian admitted he had seen Evelyn shove Mom.
