Chapter 13 - The Night Lily Was Born

The operating room doors closed behind Chloe.

I sat outside with Rachel and the court-appointed guardian.

Julian remained in county custody.

Evelyn’s attorneys demanded that she be allowed to attend by video.

The hospital refused.

For two hours, every part of my life narrowed to a red light above a door.

Then a nurse rushed out.

“The baby has been delivered. She is very small, but she is breathing.”

My legs gave way with relief.

“What about Chloe?”

“She is still in surgery.”

Lily weighed three pounds, eleven ounces.

Through the neonatal intensive care unit glass, I saw her beneath wires and soft blue light.

Her fingers were smaller than the tip of mine.

A nurse asked my relationship.

I did not know how to answer.

“I’m her biological mother.”

The words felt both true and incomplete.

Chloe had carried her.

I had been robbed of every month leading to this moment.

Yet Lily was here.

Alive.

Hours later, the surgeon told us Chloe had suffered major bleeding but was stable.

The medical power-of-attorney gave me authority over Lily’s emergency care until the court ruled otherwise.

I signed consent for respiratory treatment.

My hand shook.

This time, the signature was mine.

At dawn, Chloe woke.

I stood beside her bed.

“She’s alive,” I said.

Chloe began sobbing.

“Can I see her?”

“As soon as the doctors allow it.”

She looked at me carefully.

“You could keep me away.”

“I could.”

“Will you?”

I thought of Mom.

Of the lies.

Of the baby fighting for breath down the hall.

“No,” I said. “But nothing will ever be hidden again.”

Then a hospital administrator entered with police.

Someone had attempted to access Lily’s medical record using Evelyn’s legal authorization.

The request came from inside the hospital.

👉 Evelyn was behind bars, yet someone within the hospital was still carrying out her plan to control Lily.
