Chapter 2 - The Hospital Envelope

“Clara, wait.”
Julian followed me into the driveway.
I kept walking.
“This isn’t what you think.”
I turned so quickly that he stopped.
“Your mother just told me my pregnant sister is carrying your baby. What part am I misunderstanding?”
Chloe appeared behind him, pulling a robe around herself.
“Please don’t make a scene.”
I stared at her.
“You slept with my husband, and you’re worried about the neighbors?”
She looked down.
Evelyn stood in the doorway like a queen inspecting servants.
“Julian was unhappy,” she said. “Chloe gave him something you couldn’t.”
My hands went cold.
Julian flinched, but he did not defend me.
That silence ended our marriage before any judge could.
I reached my car and realized the keys were still inside the bakery box.
Julian’s SUV was parked beside mine.
Its passenger door stood open.
On the seat was a white hospital envelope.
My name was printed across the front.
I grabbed it before Julian could stop me.
Inside was a copy of a fertility clinic consent form.
The patient name was Chloe Bennett.
The genetic father was Julian Mercer.
At the bottom, beside a witness line, someone had forged my signature.
My knees nearly gave way.
“This wasn’t an affair,” I whispered. “You used a clinic.”
Julian’s face drained.
Chloe began crying.
Evelyn stepped forward.
“You were never supposed to see that.”
I looked at the date.
The procedure had happened nine months after my mother died.
Three weeks after Julian convinced me to postpone our own fertility treatment because we “needed time to grieve.”
The cake box sat abandoned by the door.
My mother’s memorial dinner had been built around a lie.
Julian reached for the documents.
I pulled them against my chest.
May you like
“No,” I said. “These belong to me now.”
👉 The forged clinic form did more than expose the pregnancy—it suggested someone had used Clara’s identity to authorize the entire procedure.
