Chapter 7 - The Night My Mother Died
My mother died eighteen months earlier after falling down the basement stairs.
The police called it a tragic accident.
She had been carrying a box of holiday decorations.
Julian found her.
At least, that was what he told me.
Martin’s message forced me to reopen every memory.
Chloe met me at Rachel’s office.
When I showed her the note, she turned pale.
“Evelyn told me never to mention that night.”
“What do you know?”
Chloe had visited Mom that afternoon.
She heard Evelyn arguing with her in the kitchen.
My mother accused Evelyn of pressuring Julian to access the Bennett trust.
Evelyn replied, “Once Clara gives him a child, you won’t matter.”
Mom threatened to expose Martin and remove Julian from the trust entirely.
Chloe left before the argument ended.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I thought it was family drama. Then your mother died that evening.”
I could barely breathe.
“Did you see Julian?”
“He arrived as I was leaving.”
Julian had told police he came later and found Mom alone.
That was his first proven lie about the night she died.
Rachel requested the old case file.
The basement door had no usable fingerprints because Julian cleaned the railing before police arrived.
He claimed he was removing blood.
The medical examiner noted a bruise on Mom’s upper arm that was inconsistent with the fall, but not enough to classify the death as suspicious.
There was one missing item.
Mom’s cellphone.
Julian said he never found it.
Chloe looked at me.
“I saw Evelyn take a phone from the kitchen counter.”
I called the detective who handled the case.
He agreed to review the new evidence.
That evening, Julian appeared outside my apartment.
He looked exhausted.
“I need to explain what happened at your mother’s house.”
I kept the chain on the door.
“Start talking.”
He swallowed.
“I didn’t kill her.”
