Chapter 6 - My Mother’s Secret Trust
Rachel recognized the man’s voice.
Martin Hale.
He had been my mother’s financial adviser for twenty years.
After my mother died, Martin told me her estate was simple: the suburban home, several investment accounts, and a small charitable fund.
But Chloe’s recording suggested something else.
Rachel requested the full estate archive.
By evening, she found a trust document that had never been included in the probate summary.
The Bennett Legacy Trust.
Its value was nearly $14 million.
My mother had inherited shares in a medical technology company and placed them into a private trust.
The beneficiary structure was unusual.
I controlled the trust during my lifetime.
If I died without a biological child, half transferred to Chloe and half to charity.
If I had a biological child, that child became the future sole beneficiary.
Julian had known.
Martin had shown him the confidential document two years earlier.
The baby inside Chloe could legally qualify as my biological child if my eggs were used.
But because Chloe was the gestational mother and Julian was my husband, they believed they could manipulate custody and control the inheritance.
I thought of Evelyn’s words.
That child belongs to my son.
She had not been speaking only emotionally.
She was describing ownership.
Rachel contacted the trust bank and froze all discretionary transactions.
Minutes later, Martin called me.
“You are making a dangerous mistake.”
“I found the trust.”
Silence.
Then he sighed.
“Your mother wanted to protect you.”
“From whom?”
“From the Mercer family.”
My mother had never trusted Evelyn.
She had warned Martin that Julian seemed too interested in family assets.
But Martin betrayed her after Julian offered him a percentage of future trust management fees.
“How long have you been helping them?”
“I advised them. I did not authorize fraud.”
“You told them how to steal my child.”
Martin hung up.
Rachel immediately contacted federal investigators.
Before they could reach him, Martin emptied his office and disappeared.
On his desk, he left one handwritten sentence:
