Chapter 9 - My Mother’s Last Recording
My mother had activated her phone’s voice recorder before the argument.
Her voice shook with anger.
“You will not use Clara’s marriage to steal this family’s future.”
Evelyn answered coldly.
“Julian has given your daughter years. She has given him nothing.”
“She gave him love.”
“Love does not create heirs.”
Then Julian’s voice entered.
“Mom, stop.”
My mother said, “Clara will know everything tonight.”
Footsteps moved toward the basement.
Evelyn followed.
“You always thought you were better than me.”
“I thought my daughter was safe.”
There was a struggle.
Mom gasped.
Julian shouted, “What did you do?”
Then came the sound that haunted me—the heavy impact of a body striking the stairs.
For eleven seconds, no one spoke.
Finally, Evelyn said, “It was an accident.”
Julian answered, “You pushed her.”
The recording ended.
I listened once.
Only once.
The detective took the phone into evidence.
Evelyn was arrested before dawn on suspicion of manslaughter, evidence tampering, conspiracy, medical fraud, and identity theft.
As officers led her from the house, reporters gathered outside.
She looked directly into the cameras.
“My daughter-in-law is using grief to steal my grandchild.”
Even in handcuffs, she tried to control the story.
Julian was arrested for obstruction, fraud, and conspiracy.
He asked to speak with me.
I refused.
Chloe remained free temporarily because she was cooperating and because doctors considered her pregnancy high-risk.
But trust between us was gone.
She had known too much for too long.
Rachel warned me the criminal charges did not answer the most urgent question.
“When the baby is born, who has legal custody?”
Chloe was the gestational mother.
I was the genetic mother.
Julian was the genetic father.
No valid surrogacy agreement existed.
The law did not offer a simple answer.
