Chapter 20 - Julian’s Last Claim
Julian appeared in court wearing a county-issued suit.
He looked thinner.
Older.
He did not look at Evelyn, who watched from another table in shackles.
When the judge asked why he wanted to speak, Julian stood.
“I spent years telling myself I deserved a child because I wanted one.”
His voice shook.
“I treated Clara’s body, Chloe’s grief, and Lily’s future like solutions to my failures.”
He admitted forging my signature.
He admitted helping hide Mom’s death.
He admitted using Chloe.
Then he said the words I never expected.
“I surrender every parental claim to Lily.”
Evelyn stood suddenly.
“You cannot give away my granddaughter!”
The judge ordered her to sit.
Julian finally looked at his mother.
“She is not yours.”
Evelyn screamed that I had poisoned him.
Julian did not respond.
He continued.
“I am Lily’s biological father. But biology does not make me safe.”
The courtroom fell silent.
He asked that any future contact occur only if Lily’s therapists, legal guardian, and the court believed it would help her.
He did not ask me to forgive him.
That mattered.
The judge accepted the surrender subject to final review.
Then she turned to me.
“Mrs. Mercer, do you seek sole legal parentage?”
“Yes.”
“Do you intend to erase Ms. Bennett’s role in the child’s life?”
I looked at Chloe.
“No. Lily deserves the truth about who carried her and who protected her after birth.”
Chloe began crying.
The judge granted me permanent legal parentage.
Chloe received a protected relationship plan.
Julian’s rights were terminated.
Outside court, reporters shouted questions.
I ignored them.
Inside the courthouse nursery, I lifted Lily from her carrier.
She opened her eyes.
For the first time, no legal document stood between us.
