Evelyn faced charges for manslaughter, fraud, conspiracy, identity theft, and evidence tampering.
Her attorneys argued that Mom’s fall was accidental.

Only the struggle and Julian’s words afterward.
But Julian testified.
“I saw my mother push Margaret with both hands.”
Evelyn stared at him.
“You are lying for your wife.”
“She is not my wife anymore.”
Chloe testified about the argument earlier that day.

The jury deliberated for seven hours.

Guilty of attempted custodial interference.
Evelyn showed no emotion until the judge mentioned Lily.
“You will have no contact with the child,” the judge said.
That broke her.
“She is my blood!”
I stood before the court during sentencing.
“My mother welcomed Julian into our family. Evelyn answered that kindness by turning marriage, fertility, and grief into weapons.”
I did not ask for revenge.
I asked for safety.
The judge sentenced Evelyn to thirty-one years.
She would be an old woman before becoming eligible for release.
As deputies approached, she looked at me.
“You think you won?”
I held her gaze.
“No. I survived you.”
Outside, I placed one hand against the courthouse wall and finally allowed myself to grieve.
Not as a confused daughter.
As a daughter who knew the truth.
Rachel stood beside me.
“Your mother has justice.”
“Yes.”
But Julian’s sentencing was still ahead.
