Chapter 26 - Money Could Not Buy Forgiveness
The $800,000 came from assets Julian had concealed before his arrest.
He disclosed them voluntarily after beginning a prison accountability program.
The court directed the money toward restitution.
Half returned to the Bennett trust.
Half funded the Margaret Bennett Center.
Julian sent no personal letter.
Only a signed statement:
This money was never mine.
That was the first true sentence he had given me without asking for something in return.
I did not forgive him.
But I recognized the difference between manipulation and accountability.
Years earlier, Julian would have used the money to demand access to Lily.
Now he surrendered it without conditions.
Rachel asked whether I wanted to acknowledge receipt.
I wrote one line through his attorney:
The restitution has been received and will benefit the people harmed.
Nothing more.
Lily was nearly two by then.
She loved music, blueberries, and throwing socks behind the sofa.
She had Chloe’s expressive smile from months of watching her in the womb—or perhaps that was simply something I wanted to believe.
She had my eyes.
When strangers asked whether Chloe was her mother, we answered carefully.
“Chloe carried her. Clara is her mother. They are sisters raising her with honesty.”
It was not simple.
But it was true.

I changed its terms so no spouse could gain control through marriage, custody, or medical guardianship.
Lily’s future would be protected by an independent board that included patient advocates and family law experts.
I also created a personal directive.
No medical decision involving stored genetic material could occur without live verification, independent counsel, and a waiting period.
My stolen consent became stronger protection for others.
Then the state parole board contacted me.

He had offered to reveal an undiscovered account in exchange for reduced time.
