Chapter 14 - The Nurse on Evelyn’s Payroll
Hospital security traced the unauthorized access to a neonatal nurse named Teresa Cole.
Teresa had worked at the fertility clinic before joining the hospital.
She was also Dr. Samuel Price’s sister.
The same doctor who approved the transfer of my eggs.
Police found encrypted messages between Teresa and Evelyn.
Evelyn promised her $200,000 to alter Lily’s records and list Chloe as an anonymous surrogate.
That would make Julian appear to be the only recognized genetic parent until a court challenge could be completed.
Teresa also planned to collect a blood sample and destroy the chain of custody for the official DNA test.
She was arrested before she reached Lily’s room.
Inside her locker, police found a small bottle of sedative and a printed discharge form.
The form authorized Lily’s transfer to a private neonatal facility owned by one of Martin Hale’s clients.
My daughter had been hours away from disappearing into paperwork.
Chloe heard the news from her hospital bed.
“I brought them into our lives.”
“No,” I said. “Julian and Evelyn did.”
“I helped them.”
“Yes.”
She flinched.
I did not soften the truth.
But I stayed.
Accountability and abandonment were not the same thing.
The court issued an emergency order naming me Lily’s temporary legal guardian.
Chloe retained the right to visit and participate in medical discussions.
Julian had no contact rights pending evaluation.
Evelyn was barred permanently from the hospital.
Three days later, I held Lily for the first time.
She rested against my chest beneath a warm blanket.
I expected some magical certainty.
Instead, I felt awe, grief, anger, and love all at once.
Chloe watched from a wheelchair.
“She knows your heartbeat,” she whispered.
“No,” I said gently. “She knows yours.”
We both cried.
Then Rachel called.
Dr. Samuel Price had been found dead in a motel room.
