Chapter 19 - The Amendment Chloe Never Knew About
Rachel located the missing amendment in a sealed court archive.
My mother signed it three weeks before she died.
If I had a biological child and became unable to serve as trustee, Chloe would become temporary guardian of the child’s trust interests.
Mom had not chosen Julian.
She had chosen my sister.
The document explained why.
Chloe understands loss, but she has not lost her capacity for tenderness.
I read that sentence several times.
Mom believed in the version of Chloe that existed before Evelyn exploited her grief.
Chloe cried when I showed her.
“She trusted me.”
“She did.”
“And I helped them steal your eggs.”
“Yes.”
I refused to erase either truth.
My mother’s trust did not require perfection.
It required accountability.
The family court considered the amendment while evaluating Lily’s permanent custody.
Chloe surprised everyone.
She withdrew her petition for sole parentage.
She acknowledged that the pregnancy resulted from stolen genetic material and invalid consent.
She asked only for legally protected contact if therapists believed it served Lily.
Her attorney warned that surrendering her claim could leave her with nothing.
Chloe answered, “A baby is not compensation for what happened to me.”
That sentence changed the case.
The guardian ad litem recommended that I become Lily’s legal mother.
Chloe would receive a unique status as gestational aunt, with supervised contact during the first year and expanded involvement if healthy.
Julian would have no immediate parental rights because of fraud and criminal conduct.
The judge scheduled the final hearing.
Before it began, prosecutors offered Chloe immunity for lesser conspiracy charges in exchange for full testimony.
She refused complete immunity.
“I knew enough to stop it,” she said. “I should face something.”
The prosecutor stared at her.
“So what are you asking for?”
“Probation, restitution, and mandatory counseling.”
Chloe was finally choosing consequence over escape.
Then Julian requested to testify at the custody hearing.
His attorney said he intended to surrender all parental claims.
